taking a walk on the wild side!
In 1754 Anthony Henday took 'a walk on the wild side' and became the first European to experience the breathtaking view of the Canadian Rockies. His entourage accompanied by Cree Indians were on a fur trading mission sent out by the Hudson Bay Company. They first spotted the Rockies from a hill just east of Innisfail and then camped on the shores of Innisfail's Napoleon Lake.
A hundred years later found the Danish and Icelandic settlers taking their own long walk on the wild side. They liked the area so much they ended up staying to build their own cultural communities. The short drive to Historic Markerville or the Hamlet of Dickson will reveal the fascinating heritage left by these great pioneers.
Now, 250 years after Anthony Henday, the adventurous are still getting out to enjoy the experiences of the country side. Today's ‘walk on the wild side’ may include a morning picking strawberries at The Jungle Farm followed by an afternoon up close to the famous movie bears and lions in Innisfail's Discovery Wildlife Park.
It may include a day of waterskiing or fishing on beautiful Gleniffer Lake or an evening drift down the Red Deer River. Or it may be a weekend of wild action at the Daines Rodeo Ranch just north of town. It may just include sampling some mouth watering saskatoon pie with ice cream or a cappuccino in one of our quaint country gift shops.
There's so much to experience and its all so close that we know you'll enjoy your own version of ‘a walk on the wild side’ real soon.
